3 updates in 1!

Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve updated.  If my level of busyness now is any indication of what life’s going to be like after the baby comes in 10 weeks, then I am in trouble.

Here are a few things going on:

I’m leading a photo walk on July 18th.  That’s the date of Scott Kelby’s second annual worldwide photo walk.  I participated last year, but this year thought I’d take the leadership role.  Should be a good time; I feel the route I’ve selected is a good one, and it’s already more than halfway full, so things are looking good.  Check it out, and sign up if there’s still room when you read this!

The lilies are blooming again.  Actually, they’re starting to die; I wished they lasted longer. I recently cut a bloom and brought it inside for a studio session.

Yesterday was my niece’s annual dance recital.  It was fun to watch.  My wife and I realized that in a few years we’ll probably be watching our daughter perform in a recital of her own.  I think it’d be fun to teach the class the Thriller dance.

trophies of grace

finally finished phase 1 of a major web design project:  trophies of grace.  these guys are a father and two sons out of Florida who are avid hunters, and they use that passion in order to get out their faith-based message.

the site’s not 100% done, but it’s a vast improvement over where it was before i was hired to re-design it.  have a visit & let me know what you think.

This week I’ve had the opportunity to do some fashion shoots for the first time. While I’ve taken plenty of portraits, this was the first time I’ve had to consciously pay attention to the clothes and the model as a whole, being sure that enough emphasis would be put on both. I was a little nervous when I got the assignment (for URGE), but I did some research & went into the shoot feeling pretty confident.

The above shots of Ali and Chris are my two favorites.

Overall the shoots were a lot of fun; the locations were cool & the models had good camera presence. They made things easy.

The clothes and models were provided by Henry, a shop in downtown Richmond run by Rudy & Billy:

They’re cool guys & the shop’s awesome, so be sure to check out their stuff!

Thanks to everyone for a fun couple hours of shooting!

My first main cover image!  I took this picture of Beth about 3 weeks ago at a local park.  It was a really quick shoot; she was moving that weekend, and mine was particularly busy for a reason I can’t recall.  So we had about 10 minutes to meet up & get a good picture.  I took about 30 shots & this one actually ended up being my favorite, but I had no idea it was going to be the cover until I saw the magazine today.  Exciting!  (thanks to Beth for letting me know the issue was out, and for being a great subject!)

If you’re interested in checking out the latest issue of Sports Backers Quarterly, it’s available online here.  I also took the pictures on pages 14 & 20-23.

Had another photography first today…but the story will have to wait until tomorrow.

a new service

Posted in design, inspiration, photography, photoshop on July 14, 2008 by chris

so i’m trying to expand my list of services offered, and a photo shoot for SBQ this weekend inspired me to try this one: photo collages. why not try to add a little interest to a photo by putting in a frame with some stylish elements? a little Photoshop magic goes a long way.

i feel it can do one of two things: enhance a good photo, and make an average photo more interesting. thoughts?

p.s. i think the photos i took turned out well, too.

a world record

Posted in inspiration, photography on June 29, 2008 by chris

Met a world record holder yesterday. Kevin Young holds the world record in the 400m hurdles, which he set in Barcelona in 1992. He ran the 400 in 46.78 seconds, and he did so by developing a technique that gave him a 9-foot (!) stride.

His company (Phewsioneering) was in town for the past few days putting on some training clinics in conjunction with Adrenaline Sports USA, and I was assigned by a local publication to document some of the happenings. Paul from Adrenaline Sports was very helpful, and Kevin and his partner Ed Lovelace from Phewsioneering were very accommodating for the photographer that kept interrupting their training session for “just one more” shot. But I think the people that actually had to run and work out in the 95-degree heat appreciated the extra couple minutes of rest…

I’m a member of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. I’ve belonged to the organization for nearly 3 years now, and it’s one of the best investments I’ve ever made; I’ve learned more about using Photoshop for design and photography than I ever learned in school.

NAPP is a great resource if you’re at all interested in learning more about Photoshop. Check them out!
